How we calculate pet costs
This page explains exactly how every dollar figure in the calculator is produced. We source a small set of national cost anchors from free, citable studies, derive food cost from the animal's weight, and apply two breed multipliers — one for size, one for health risk. Every figure traces back to a named source and the date it was valid.
The model in four parts
Every estimate is built from four independent components. We do not hand-price hundreds of breeds across a dozen categories.
AI writes the qualitative prose; a deterministic engine fills the numbers.
Prose and figures can never disagree because the numbers are injected after the text is written. The prose itself is barred from containing any raw dollar amount or bare three-plus-digit number.
Breed cost profile
Per-breed figures for purchase or adoption, initial vet work, starter supplies, training, and the recurring lines — food, routine vet care, grooming, insurance, consumables.
Breed multipliers
A size/weight factor and a health-risk factor applied to the national anchors. Food is derived separately from weight and energy.
Household answers
Your inputs adjust insurance, professional training, food quality, grooming frequency, boarding or daycare, and living situation.
Typical lifespan
The lifetime figure is First Year + Annual × (Lifespan − 1), optionally compounded by an inflation rate you set.

National cost anchors
Roughly a dozen US national dollar constants, sourced once and refreshed each on its own cadence. Each anchor carries a source, an as-of date, and a confidence rating. Placeholder anchors use a defensible market estimate and are flagged in code for replacement with a hard primary source.

Health-risk factor
Scales vet and insurance. Tier 3 (breed-average) is the 1.0 baseline, assigned per breed from documented health conditions against insurer breed tables and claim data.

Coat factor
Grooming scales by a 1–5 coat-maintenance rating against the short-coat baseline.

Food cost is derived, not an anchor
We run a veterinary maintenance-energy-requirement (MER) calorie model off the breed's adult weight and energy rating, then multiply the daily kilocalories by a retail price per kilogram.
Big dogs cost more per year but less per pound — the calorie model already captures that allometric scaling. Price per kg refreshes quarterly from a retail feed; the calorie model itself is stable.
A premium or raw diet is modelled at roughly 1.5× the standard food cost via a diet-grade scalar applied after the calorie model.
Worked example — French Bulldog
Small size (0.92 vet / 0.90 insurance), health risk tier 4 (1.10 / 1.18), coat rating 2 (1.0). Every line the engine emits records the exact multipliers it used, so any number on any breed page can be reconstructed by hand.
Food is derived from the MER calorie model at the breed's adult weight, then priced at $4.00/kg with the diet-grade scalar.

Primary data sources
All figures are US national averages drawn from free, published, citable material. We use the numbers; we never lift source prose or whole tables. Every figure in the engine carries a source and an as-of date.

What these estimates can and can't tell you
- Give you a realistic planning budget for a typical dog of a given breed, size, and health-risk profile, in a typical US household.
- Show you how that budget shifts with your own choices — food, insurance, grooming, boarding.
- Separate one-time first-year setup from the perpetual annual run-rate.
- Predict an individual animal's health. Two dogs of the same breed can have very different lifetime vet bills.
- Price a major emergency. A single surgery or cancer diagnosis can dwarf a year of routine costs — that is what the emergency-fund line is for.
- Reflect your specific local providers. Vet and grooming prices differ between practices in the same city.
